What I Ate Wednesday #135: Toronto to New York

This week, What I Ate Wednesday kind of feels like a Monday to me, as I have been off for a few days. Yesterday, I shared my Saturday in Toronto, so here’s what I ate on Sunday, which started at the ass-crack of dawn in Canada and ended in New York City. Thank you as always to the lovely Jenn of Peas & Crayons for hosting the weekly link party. I never get daylight savings right. Having gone to bed way later than usual, I was up at 4:45 a.m., unable to get back to bed. Part of it was that my stomach was growling, so I ate half a blueberry crisp Cliff bar that was in my suitcase. After some debate, I decided to hit the gym in the building I was staying in, figuring a little cardio (while reading this) would either give me an endorphin boost to get me through part of the day—or tire me out. Toronto Gym

Thankfully, it did the latter. I slept another two hours and suddenly it was time to go get brunch. After eating an energizing meal at Cora’s (which reminded me a little of a Canadian IHOP), we headed into the city, where we walked around the Distillery District until it was time for me to go to the airport.

Fortunately, my trip home was smooth.I used to be terrified to fly, and I had a to of anxiety about getting to/from the airport, but that seems to have mellowed out a bit. So there’s one good thing about getting older…

Here’s what I ate on Sunday, starting with my early-morning blood sugar-saver.

  • Snack: Cliff bar, half before my workout, and half after my nap
  • Breakfast/Brunch: At Cora’s: skillet au gratin with potatoes, veggies, and a poached egg. I think the cheese was cheddar. The fruit on the side was delicious too. I also had a lot of coffee.
  • Lunch/Snack: Edamame salad from the kiosk at the airport; an unpictured olive oil dark chocolate truffle from Soma chocolate.
  • Dinner: Yellow split pea & cabbage soup with nutritional yeast on top
  • Snack: Plain yogurt with cereal, pumpkin butter, PB & fruit after an unpacking session (ugly to look at but did the trick)

Toronto, Day 1

Good morning! As promised, here are some pictures from my trip to Toronto this past weekend. When I visit a new place, rather than feel like I need to see All the Sights, I like to do a mix of touristy and everyday local people things.

After a late dinner Friday night at 360, a fancy restaurant at the top of the CN Tower (I ordered the lamb chops), I slept really well. Unfortunately, the friend I was visiting was feeling really sick and needed to rest, so after some French toast and salad, I ventured out armed with a hand-drawn map and a suggested itinerary. I don’t like to admit when I’m terrified, but the truth was I’d never traveled alone before, much less explored a foreign city by myself. Still, I had awesome directions and a vague idea of how the streets were laid out. So what if it was a raining a little?

After some walking along Spadina, one of the main roads, I found myself in Chinatown and standing in front of a sign for a David Bowie exhibit that just so happen to be at the AGO. If you’ve been with me a while, you know how much I love David Bowie, so of course I had to check it out. It was awesome! The combination of video and audio was the perfect rainy-afternoon activity.

I spent a good few hours at the museum before realizing I was starting to get hungry, so I headed to the Yorkville neighborhood for lunch at Cafe Nervosa, which had come highly recommended. I had a great time sitting at the bar talking to the staff and watching all the lovely dishes come out of the kitchen. I went with the seafood salad and a glass of prosecco.

By this time, it was getting way too late to attempt another museum, so I vented back through Chinatown until ending up at the Dark Horse Espresso bar. I sat down with an essay I’d been working on and ordered a cappuccino. It was really nice.

Luckily, my friend was feeling better in time for her birthday dinner at a downtown restaurant. Our table of ten ladies shared some delicious foods like bulgur-stuffed eggplant, seared fish, several kinds of salad, pumpkin pie, and cake.Weslodge Apps

It was really fun to meet so many new people from all over the world. Amazing how we all seem to end up talking about the same damn thing: men, and what the f*** is wrong with them.

I went to bed late and happily exhausted. I’ll be back with more about my trip.

Happy Monday! I am so glad I took today off because I am still feeling all the miles I walked in Toronto this past weekend. I’ll be back with a re-cap post. After I finish putting away all these groceries…groceries
