Using your iPhone to scan food labels for allergens may be in the near future. Barcode administrator GS1 Australia, in partnership with NestlĂ© and the Deakin University, has developed an iPhone application that scans barcodes to detect allergens like wheat, egg, peanuts and shellfish. The thinking behind it is that even though the information provided on the label may be limited, the barcode is there, allowing important data about a food’s content to be accessed.

I’m curious to see how this develops and whether it catches on over here in the US. Personally, I think it’s a great idea. You can read more here.
