Pros and Cons

Posted on

I come from a family of morning people. For the most part (not counting a few stretches between 2003 and 2007 where I sort of managed to act my age), I too have always been an early riser—nothing too crazy, but I consider it sleeping in if I wake up at 9 on the weekends. Hell, even 8 feels like a big deal.

As with anything, there are pros and cons to waking up early on the weekends. The cons are pretty obvious: Being tired and all the things that come with that, such as physical and mental fatigue, crankiness and post-overcompensation caffeine jitters.

There are plenty of pros, though. For example, I find working out and doing laundry in relative peace and quiet are much more enjoyable in the few hours before crowding becomes a problem. I also really like the early-morning light. It energizes me to knock whatever errands I have off my to-do list, even if I’m tired. It’s satisfying to know you can always lay down for a nap having already done stuff.

Another good thing about early mornings is breakfast. Today, after a trip to the gym, I made some apple-spice oats and poured them into a near-empty jar of Biscoff. Reading the paper, drinking coffee and listening to Car Talk on the radio (I know, I know), I was a pretty happy camper, even if I’d woken up at 6:30 after only 4 hours of sleep.

Are you an early or a late riser? What are you up to this weekend?

I too am an early riser, and I also appreciate the amazing quietness that comes from doing the laundry before the family wakes up. My favorite part of being awake early though is the food. Breakfast food is incredible in my opinion and I would eat it all the time if I could lol.

That it is! Where I live there are a lot of mountains so the sunlight peaking up over them is really beautiful, especially when there is snow on them

This is too funny. I am also an early riser and had the exact same years of existence where I “acted my age” (2003-2007; my undergrad days. yours too?) and slept past 8 (which also feels pretty late!).

Also, my partner loves Car Talk, but I’m on the fence….growing on me, but still on the fence….

Hah yep, me too. Even then, I went through some pretty inconvenient early-riser phases, but sleeping until 11 now and then made me feel a bit more like a normal college student!

My ex indirectly got me into Car Talk—I didn’t have a radio before we lived together, but he’d leave it on all the time, and I came to really like it. At first I was, like, “Why am I enjoying this? I don’t even have a car…” It still cracks me up, though!

ahhh, early riser all the way. If I didn’t wake up early on the weekends, I’d get nothing done! I like getting my run finished and relaxing a teeny bit before I start the day. Which pretty much involves studying MNT alll day lately 🙂
