Professor Aims to Shed Pounds Eating Junk Food

When it comes to weight loss, a lot of people will tell you to eliminate this or that food group or to load up on protein to shed pounds. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are those who believe that a calorie is a calorie is a calorie.

A Kansas State University professor is aiming to prove that junk food does not necessarily lead to weight gain by eating a calorie-controlled diet of high-fat snacks. Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition who teaches a class on energy balance and obesity, said he wants to show that he can lose weight on an 1,800 calorie diet of crap. On the menu: breakfast pizza, chocolate cake rolls, chocolate bars, and sugary cereal.

He said, “The purpose is to illustrate metabolic, mental, and sociological issues surrounding weight. The principle is simple: eat fewer calories than I expend.”

However, he does expect his overall health to decline, so he’ll be monitoring his body mass index, body composition, blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels.

The results of that study will be interesting. I remember when Super Size Me came out, there was an American woman who felt patronised and wanted to prove that you could eat Macdonalds and lose weight. Everything she ate was from Macdonalds (so burgers, fries, milkshakes etc) but she did it in a calorie controlled way, so she still lost weight. Don’t know what affect it had on her overall health though.

That’s something I’m always trying to explain to people—you can eat this stuff and still lose weight. Obviously, it’s not great to eat only junk because you won’t be getting enough of the nutrients you need, but when you leave room for little indulgences in your daily diet, you can still reach and maintain a healthy weight.

More power to Professor Haub. It does all comes down to calories and as long as your nutrition is balanced, under TDEE and above BMR, you will lose weight and do so healthily.
